A Lesson At Sea

Have you ever been so excited for something but yet in the back of your mind so sad? Well in April of 2019 I can truly feel that feeling with everything inside me. When I had my most bittersweet trip, a high school graduation cruise with my best friend.

Found This Sweet Photo at Our Door

It was of course still an amazing trip, we cruised from Florida to Labadee Haiti, Cozumel Mexico, and the most amazing site, Montego Bay Jamaica! There were so many different cultures and experiences combined that you didn't even think about the chapter you're leaving behind. Until someone asks what you are celebrating, or when you start to laugh until you cry with your best friend and realize that, that may be the last time. But we'll worry about the sappiness for another time.

I had been on a couple of cruises before and even some of those same designs so I knew what to expect from the cruise ship itself but this trip was so much better.

My family and I were so talkative and overwhelmed with excitement to start this cruise at sea. I don't know if I remember the first day at sea, it was just the usual tanning, dipping in pools, and soaking it all in.

The one thing I do remember is being so excited to finally dock in another country the very next day. Before the trip even took place, we already had some excursions booked so that way we could make the most out of each country.

When we first arrived in Haiti, I really didn't know what to expect, knowing its rough reputation. But it is still one of my favorite travel destinations to this day. Haiti's extrusion was to get access to a private beach area including a food buffet.

A Quick Stroll in Haiti!

The food buffet was honestly really cool, we got to eat authentic Haitian food right there on the beach and lay in floats on the ocean with the cruise ship in the background. Looking back, this honestly seems like something out of a movie. However, while we were laying there catching some rays, I still had a thought of the future, what was High Point going to be like? Will I keep in touch with my so-called, high school best friend?

Without all the mind wandering, this day was extremely relaxing, except when we got the rush from ziplining over the ocean from the top of a cliff while having a mini photoshoot along the way.

Our next stop was Mexico. Mexico was the execution I was most excited for, where we rented jeeps to go on a trail to the Mayan Ruins. The jeep ride to the Ruins was like no ride I've ever experienced, I laughed so hard as I kept flying out of my seat as the jeep tires went up and down along the dirt trail.

The jeep ride was such a great off-road experience and the food we got served after was even better, hands down the best guacamole I have ever had! After we explored the area, I asked my mom to take a picture of me and my best friend in front of the gigantic waves crashing into the rock. I stood there smiling as big as I could be as I threw up my arms in amazement, beside me stood the girl who was there throwing all the ups and downs during high school. I thought that this may be our last picture together for a while and that big smile faded off my face.

After this all-day excursion, my family and I boarded the boat for another day at sea. I loved at sea days just as much as I loved exploring a new country honestly. The at seas were the days I got to bond most with my friend. We got to float in the biggest pool you'd ever see, that just happened to be in the middle of the ocean. But when we would just float we got to bond more, yeah the excursions would give us memories of a lifetime but floating is what made us closer if that was even possible.

Our last stop was Jamaica and it was unquestionably the most fun stop of the trip. As soon as we got off the cruise ship we got onto another boat to take us to a smaller private island off the coast of Jamaica. Once we got to the other island it was snorkeling time, we saw so many amazing sea creatures that I had never seen in the ocean before, including starfish and a sea-spider!

Spotting those Sea-Spiders

After snorkeling, we went back to this smaller island and ate the best Jerk Chicken around. We had a dance-off and I just tried to enjoy the last day left of the cruise, of summer, and with my best friend.

Looking back now, yeah I still have all the amazing memories but honestly, I think I did miss the cruise altogether. I was so focused on the closing last chapter of my life and what the next one has in store that I didn't live in the moment.

I didn't truly get to soak in the bumps on the jeep ride or while I was swimming in the ocean being memorized by amazing sea creatures. I think this trip taught me so much from learning about other cultures to experiencing the local life. But the true lesson was to enjoy the moment while you have it because it fades too quickly.
